I'm Emily, and I want to live in a world where every woman has the power to make informed decisions about her health care.
As a Peace Corps Volunteer in West Africa, I saw that women were the backbones of the local community but culturally undervalued. As I watched women give birth in the maternity building, which was essentially a tile bathroom with no electricity or running water, I was fascinated by the strength of these women and by the magic of the human body. In this community, I partnered with nurses at the local health clinic to talk to mothers about infant care and breastfeeding, hopefully inspiring mothers to feel proud of their ability to raise healthy, thriving children. In those moments, I discovered how much I loved helping people see their own power. |
I received my Masters in Public Health in 2017, where I studied Maternal and Child Nutrition. That year, I also took my first DONA childbirth education class and immediately found my calling.
I've worked with HIV-positive clients in NYC, new refugee mothers in Atlanta, and health administrators in the DR Congo. Empowering people continues to inspire me.
